In an historical ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, Amy Coney Barrett was sworn in as the 115th Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court Monday evening. The Senate Judiciary Committee confirmed Barrett earlier in the day by a 52-48 vote, which was cast strictly along party lines with one exception. Republican Maine Sen. Susan Collins voted with the minority.

Following an introduction by President Trump, who called it a “momentous day,” Barrett was sworn in by Associate Justice Clarence Thomas under a Constitutional Oath. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer Barrett’s Judicial Oath swearing-in at a private ceremony later today.

Barrett, who was appointed to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals by President Trump in 2017, became only the fifth woman to serve on the Supreme Court and the only one with school-aged children. After being sworn in, Barrett addressed the gathering at the White House and the nation. “I am grateful for the confidence you have expressed in me and I pledge to you and the American people that I will discharge my duties to the very best of my ability.”

Following the confirmation vote earlier Monday, GOP senators praised Barrett and the Constitutional process at a press conference.

Said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, one of several senators who spoke, “Today President Donald Trump delivered on one of the central promises he made to the American people. To nominate principled Constitutionalists to the U.S. Supreme Court. Today the Republican majority in the United States Senate delivered on one of the principled promises we made to the American people. To confirm principled Constitutionalists to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
