Call Me Stormy

Finding righteous currents in turbulent times

Aldous Huxley

With the global political climate of 2019 nearing a revolutionary clash between old and new guards, most are or have become familiar with George Orwell’s 1949 novel 1984 – a picture of a dystopian future ruled by fear, censorship, and oppression. Though still a titan in the literary world, lesser known in pop-culture is Aldous Huxley – author of 1931 dystopian novel Brave New World, presaging Orwell by almost two decades – and, oh yeah – former teacher of Orwell’s at Eton College.

Where Orwell imagined a society controlled by a spy state, Huxley first imagined a society controlled by its decadence. As Neil Postman wrote: “In short, Orwell feared that what we hate would ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.” More from John Ward.
