Why Bats Carry Many Diseases

One-fifth of mammals today are bats, who benefit mankind in several different ways, such as pollinating plants, regrowing forests and controlling pests. But many of them are outright dangerous, because they carry an array of diseases that are harmful to humans. While bats aren’t to blame for everything, they have played a role in the transmission of at least 12 viruses, including SARS, and maybe even COVID-19.
