Satan’s Web

Welcome to Chapter Two from Manhunt of Mystery Island, our current Saturday Matinee serial. Originally released in 1945, this sci-fi flavored actioner was repackaged in 1966 as the 100-minute TV movie Captain Mephisto and the Transformation Machine, so you might have seen some of this material in that condensed form. But over the next four months, we’ll present all 15 chapters of the original serial in their entirety, a new installment appearing each Saturday. Manhunt Of Mystery Island

Today we present the first chapter of Manhunt of Mystery Island, our new Saturday Matinee serial. Released in 15 chapters by Republic Pictures in 1945, Manhunt of Mystery Island served as a major influence for Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In fact, Spielberg copied three of the set pieces from this serial for his own movie.

This opening chapter, Secret Weapon, introduces us to Mystery Island‘s hero Lance Reardon and the plucky Claire Forrest. Claire is the daughter of Professor William Forrest, inventor of the Radiatomic Power Transmitter. When he’s kidnapped by a mad genius disguised as the legendary pirate Captain Mephisto, Lance and Claire must spring into action to plot a daring rescue.

Manhunt of Mystery Island stars Roy Barcroft as Mephisto, Richard Bailey as Lance, Linda Stirling as Claire and Forrest Taylor as the professor. Enjoy, and return next Saturday for Chapter Two, Satan’s Web.

Superman, The Payoff

We bid adieu to Superman today with The Payoff, the 15th and concluding chapter in our 15-part presentation of the original 1948 Columbia Pictures’ black & white series that introduced the Man of Steel to the Silver Screen. Join us next week as we launch a new Saturday Matinee series, Manhunt on Mystery Island, the 1945 Republic Pictures serial that served as an inspiration to Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones movies.
