Dr. No Speaks

U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn warns that the United States has only 2 to 5 years to get its fiscal house in order, or face the likelihood of an economic collapse marked by runaway inflation that could approach 15-18 percent annually. The Oklahoma Republican, a physician, has been given the nickname “Dr. No” because of his vocal opposition to wasteful government spending. He advocates strong entitlement reform, elimination of “waste, fraud and duplication,” and an end to pork-barrel projects, saying “both parties have equally participated in abandoning the limited role of the federal government.”

Coburn outlines his ideas in an interview with Reason.TV’s Nick Gillespie, drawing from the senator’s new book The Debt Bomb: A Bold Plan to Stop Washington from Bankrupting Our Economy. Besides the economy, Coburn also addresses legislation he put into place mandating the creation of the website USASpending.Gov. This tool allows you to see how tax dollars are allocated, showing how much money each agency is spending, who gets the funds and what purposes are being served.

Losing the War on Poverty

President Obama is spending 42 percent more on welfare programs than President Bush, yet the number of Americans sliding into poverty keeps growing. Why? This Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation video suggests the problem lies with a flawed approach, emphasizing federal redistribution of wealth rather than free enterprise as the best means to tackle poverty. Of note: Poverty rates dropped steadily in the United States until the 1960s when the federal government became more proactively involved in the War of Poverty. The end result: A bigger government, but no discernible advances in eradicating poverty. Hadley Heath with the Independent Women’s Forum presents the CFPF case. H/T Powerline

Ending Big SIS

No, we’re not talking about Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security. The acronym SIS, in this case, stands for “Special Interest State,” as referenced in a new book by James V. DeLong called Ending Big SIS and Renewing the American Republic. Citing only one example, DeLong proclaims, “Obamacare is not, as one judge says, a national solution to a problem. It’s 2,000 pages of special-interest-written law.”   DeLong, who has worked for several government agencies and Washington-based think tanks, currently is a contributing editor to Reason. Here, he’s interviewed on his book by Reason TV’s Nick Gillespie.

Give This School An “F”

Shannon Cooper cheered as her daughter walked across the stage to get her diploma from South Florence High School in South Carolina, but just minutes later, Shannon was handcuffed and arrested. Her offense: Violating the school district’s rules prohibiting family members from cheering any of the graduating seniors. No wonder dropout rates are at all-time highs. Failure is to be expected when dimwitted educators stack the decks against celebrating accomplishment.

Soda Jerk Michael Bloomberg

Godzilla’s going to be pig-biting mad the next time he surfaces in Gotham City. Mayor Bloomberg,  Reason’s “Nanny of the Month,” has just deep-sixed the sale of Supersize “sugary” drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and other public venues. Note to Godzilla: Drop New York from your itinerary, big guy, unless you’re packing your own mecha flask of saki.
