Regulations, Food Don’t Jive

Dan D’Amico, professor of economics at Loyola University in New Orleans, is terse: Government food regulations make us less healthy. And this includes the “organic myth,” says D’Amico. A good example, he says, are regulations that certify food as organic. “Don’t these regulations help small farmers. Unfortunately, no,” D’Amico says. “Buying organic has become a billion-dollar industry. Big businesses have lots of resources to invest time and money to make sure they benefit from and comply with organic certification. Small farmers, on the other hand, have a harder time affording the monetary costs of paperwork and the cost of complying.” Join the conversation on this edition of Learn Liberty as D’Amico elaborates.
