GOP Posts Senate Gains

Republicans not only held the Senate but added a couple of seats in Tuesday’s midterm elections. They appeared to take four Senate seats previously held by Democrats — in Indiana, North Dakota, Missouri and Florida. But as of 12:30 am, results still had not been announced for Arizona, Nevada and Montana, so final counts remained in a state of flux. Also, neither of the top two candidates won 50 percent in the Mississippi special election so a runoff election will take place there later this fall.

It appeared the Democrats might retake control of the House but, if so, it will be by the most narrow of margins. They did not take 30, 40 or 50 seats in the House, perhaps as few as 25. They needed 23 seats to gain a majority. Some news organizations projected the Democrats has taken the House while others said that was a premature call. As of 1 am, seats remained in flux — some flipping back and forth.

In gubernatorial races, Republicans claimed both Ohio and Florida, and remained locked in a close contest to retain Wisconsin.

Overall, turnout exceeded what we usually see in midterm elections but fell short of totals from presidential elections. Here is a Bill Still report on the early vote counting. Stay tuned as we will share updates throughout the day.
