The 8-Second Country
Determining what is the shortest-lived country ever is complicated, because searching for the answer depends on what is considered a country. There are two theories: the first is the Constitutive Theory, which states that being a country is based on international recognition. The second is the Declarative Theory, which sets four criteria, including permanent population, defined territory, a government and foreign relations with other states. Keeping the two in mind, the Russian Federative Democratic Republic met all four criteria but was in existence only six hours. Believe it or not, they were outdone by a country that lasted eight seconds! See which nation takes the cake in this edition of Half as Interesting.
