Abandoned City Of Nukes
When the United States abandoned a secret military base below Greenland’s ice sheet in the early 1960s, it left behind tons of nuclear waste. The clandestine project was actually an entire underground city, Camp Century, complete with housing, lounges, kitchens, scientific labs and even a barber shop, all generated by a nuclear power plant. But the ice sheet began to shift and destabilize the facility, prompting the U.S. to shut down the operation. Fast-forward a half decade and warmer temperatures in the Arctic threaten to turn Camp Century into an environmental disaster. Research climatologist William Colgan and the Geological Survey of Greenland and Denmark search for solutions in this edition of Seeker.
