Have you ever found yourself enjoying a piece of fruit or pastry, then you clumsily drop it on the floor? If you quickly pick it up, is it safe to eat? Most of us adhere to the five-second rule: if you pick it up within five seconds, it’s safe to digest. Research in 2003 revealed that 50 percent of men used the five-second rule. Amazingly, the number jumped to 70 percent for women. More importantly, research found that brief contact with a contaminated floor will affect your food, wet or dry.
