The Evolution of Intelligence
The general consensus is that intelligence is the crowning achievement of evolution. Fact is, humans are the lone intelligent species on the planet in its 4.5 billion year existence and we’ve only been here a fraction of that time. “So you come to the astounding conclusion that intelligence is not really necessary,” says theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. “That Mother Nature has done perfectly well without intelligent creatures for millions of years and that we are the new kid on the block.” That begs the question, how did we become intelligent? Kaku says there are three main ingredients that separated us from the animals and explains in this episode of Big Think.
