The Skill Nobody Taught You
French scholar Blaise Pascal made most of his contributions to math and physics, but perhaps his most dramatic work came in the fields of theology and philosophy, where he authored a book titled Pensees. While the book is a mathematician case for choosing a life of faith, Pascal also delves into ruminations of what it means to be human–specifically, the thought that “all of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” Pascal wrote that we fear the silence of existence, dread boredom and instead choose aimless distraction.
