Sugar is simply a class of molecules called carbohydrates found in a wide variety of food and drink. So when you ingest these sugars, your taste buds, brain and gut immediately take notice, activating a reward system. The process, of course, is also similar when dealing with alcohol and drugs and can easily get out of control, leading to addiction.
