How Middle Earth Shaped Music

Songwriters are quick to reference poetry in their lyrics or draw inspiration from works of fiction. But although many authors got nods, the favorite of the 1970s rock scene was legendary science fiction author J.R.R. Tolkien. Top-flight acts, such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Rush referenced Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Hobbit in their works, with the wizard Gandalf and hobbit Gollum among their favorites. Tolkien’s influence continued in the ’80s and ’90s, and Middle Earth references are commonplace in metal lyrics today. Here’s more from Polyphonic.
