Rockefeller’s Vast Empire

John D. Rockefeller built an empire so vast, that after more than a century of technological advances, no man has managed to overtake his accomplishments. Rockefeller’s business was oil and his jewel was the Standard Oil Company. With the invention of the automobile decades away, Rockefeller realized early on that the biggest profits to be had were not in drilling for oil but in refining it. His strategy worked and by 1880 his companies were refining 90 percent of the country’s oil.
