The History of April Fools Day
Best estimates are April Fools Day dates back to 1582 France during the reformation of the calendar. Back then, people celebrated New Year’s Day for eight days–March 25 to April 1. With the new calendar system, the eighth day moved from April 1 to January 1. Many people didn’t know of the change until years later and continued the ritual of celebrating New Year’s for eight days. Those who were informed of the change and adjusted their calendars made fun of the “fools” who were uninformed. The ridiculing evolved into a tradition of playing pranks on other people and spread across the planet like wildfire. And the rest, as they say, is a lot of foolishness!
