Seeing Things That Aren’t There

After more than a century of observation and seven spacecrafts, people continue to see weird things on the planet Mars. Case in point was a recent photo sent our way by the Curiosity rover that appeared to show a woman standing near the edge of a Martian escarpment. Turned out to be a visual aberration, of course, but why are we seeing things that aren’t there? Rest easy, folks, it’s only pareidolia, the tendency humans have to perceive familiar images, especially faces, where none exist.
