The Transformation of Medellin
During the 1980s, the city of Medellin, capital of Antioquia Province in Columbia, was ground zero for Pablo Escobar’s drug cartel. Along with cartel violence, left wing guerilla groups were also active in the area, transforming Medellin into the murder capital of the world. This was especially prevalent in the Comuna 13 neighborhood, the most densely populated in the city and among the most dangerous communities in the world. Tensions came to a head when the government launched Operation Orion, which quelled the violence but claimed many victims. Over the next few years, with the help of neighboring municipalities and local organizations, Medellin, and Comuna 13 in particular, evolved into a community of life, hope and peace.
