COVID-19 Cure On Fast Track

With American pharmaceutical companies fast-tracking research into a cure for COVID-19, some officials are projecting a vaccine for the public as early as January, while others say it could be sooner.

One reason why the surge is breaking records is because the vaccines are based on next generation genetic technologies that can be developed and scaled up more quickly than conventional ones. These are known as genetic and viral vector vaccines, which have been in the development stage for decades.

In the following video, host Elena Guobyte, of the JAMA Network, explains the principles underlying the leading DNA, messenger RNA (mRNA), and viral vector vaccine candidates, and how they might induce immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
