The term “gardyloo” had its origins in the Middle Ages. Before discarding waste from upper-story windows, the Scots would shout “gardyloo.” Meaning: Be on your guard for the loo is about to hit the fan! The term persisted into the early 20th century, until internal toilets became widely prevalent.
