OPHELIA FLAME

Going by the tagline “The Burning Sensation,” Ophelia Flame is among the veteran performers on the Neo-Burlesque circuit. She was a Miss Exotic World runner-up in 1999, and since has co-produced more than 300 Miss Lili’s Burlesque Revue shows, especially popular in the Midwest, particularly in the Twin Cities, where she is based. She has an infectious smile and often employs humor and outrageous props in her acts.

Watch as she impersonates a woman expressing herself, using a Xerox machine for maximum exposure, at the 2011 Miss Exotic World competition at The Orleans Casino in Las Vegas.

She also does a  fun routine to The Champs’ classic song “Tequila.” One thing’s for certain. She will never be mistaken for Pee Wee Herman.

MISSY MALONE

Scotland’s most celebrated burlesque artist, Missy Malone, isn’t a good fan dancer. She’s a fantastic one. But the fans are only a small part of her stage arsenal. For an act she calls “The Bride,” paying homage to the 1935 movie The Bride of Frankenstein, she dances using that silts that transform her into a towering, nine-foot figure. She also does a champagne-themed balloon dance and impersonates a gambling cowgirl in “Ace of Spades.”

To get a sense of her elaborate costumes and stage props, check out this routine called “Jack Frost,” performed at Burlescapades, hosted by the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland.

From an early age, Missy was inspired by classic American pin-up artwork, particularly WWII airplane nose art. This passion is evident in “The Military Strip,” a duet she performed with Leyla Rose at The Arches in Glasgow, Scotland.

MISS CABARETTA

When we think of Japan, we think of sushi and sumo wrestlers. But Miss Cabaretta — real name Deka Tamagi — has also made burlesque part of the social fabric in Japan. Known for her exotic costumes and showy, high-stepping dances, she’s a fan of vintage burlesque. To quote the Taipei Times, “The voluptuous beauty’s act takes cues from burlesque performers of the 1950s and 1960s. Swaying and swirling gracefully across the stage, she caresses herself and her wavy black hair before slowly taking off pieces of her tasseled and bejeweled costumes.”

Here she’s ready to blast off in a military-themed dance at the Amaranth Lounge in Tokyo.

She cites eclectic musical influences, from contemporary rock to classic Cuban jazz. In this performance at Tokyo’s Liquid Loft, she’s undulating to some vintage blues.

MIDNITE MARTINI

Midnite Martini bills herself as “The Mile High Flying Tease.” That’s not only because she’s based in the mile-high state of Colorado, but also trumpets the fact that aerial performance is central to her act. She says her recipe “consists of the most delectable ABC’s — aerial, burlesque and circus — all finely shaken into a perfect combination of entertainment, sass and tease.”

Born in South Korea, but raised in Denver, she’s the inventor of what she calls “the Midnite Finger Fan Dance.” She also is a co-producer of the Colorado Burlesque Festival. Here she performs “The Nasty,” an aerial fabric burlesque, at the 2012 festival.

MICHELLE L’AMOUR

The reigning queen of the Chicago burlesque scene, Michelle L’Amour uses the tagline “The Ass That Goes POW!” After you’ve seen her video “Butthoven’s 5th Symphony,” you’ll fully grasp that marketing hook. She grew up in Orland Park, Ill., and began performing burlesque at age 22 while studying finance at the University of Illinois. Now, she applies her business skills toward her dance career.

She operates her own academy, the Studio L’Amour, and tours the world teaching the L’Amour Method. She appeared on the French TV show, “France’s Got Talent,” as well as its American counterpart and Fox’s “A Current Affair.” Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson describes himself as “a huge fan.” She also won the title of Miss Exotic World 2005 with her Snow White routine.

Without any further ado,  here’s her classical nod to Beethoven.

MELODY MANGLER

With her flaming red hair and her comedic flair, Vancouver’s Melody Mangler has been called “a cross between Lili St. Cyr and Lucille Ball.” Melody’s a dynamo and a fireball, for sure, who incorporates singing, dancing and comedy into her shows. She can be silly — as you’d expect from the artistic director of the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society — but also as sultry as they come. Take a peep at her Little Bo Peep striptease presented at the 2011 Toronto Burlesque Festival.

MEDIANOCHE

Born and raised in southern Spain, Medianoche is a professional tango and flamenco dancer as well as a stripper. Some of her acts pay nostalgic homage to Spain — such as “Granada” and “Dada del Ruso” — but she can also bust loose with something modern, like “Typewriters and Fishnets,” in which a secretary abandons her typing for a low stocking peel with a desktop tassel-twirl climax.

A member of the vibrant New York burlesque scene, she tours extensively, including a stint in Dita von Teese’s Strip Strip Hooray! cast. Described by the emcee as “sin in a hourglass,” here she performs a sultry number to live music by The Hot Sardines in Dominion, New York. The band members do seem to be having trouble averting their gaze.

MARLENE VON STEENVAG

One of the world’s great fan dancers, Germany’s Marlene Von Steenvag often evokes the high, theatrical glamour of the Moulin Rouge or Las Vegas. Her costumes are showy and elaborate, but she also has a naughty side, exploring the realm of fetishes. In this act, which she calls “Pan’s Dream,” she fashions an entirely fresh fantasy world. The video was shot in Vienna at the Cirque Rouge No. 10, in January 2011.

LILY DELUXE

Lily Deluxe admits she dwells in the past, but lucky for us, she expresses that passion by wearing lingerie from the Belle Epoque era of the late 19th century. She’s a member of Sweden’s Dames of Burlesque troupe — dedicated to barnstorming the country in a state of undress. She combines elegant grace with tongue-in-cheek humor to hook audiences.

Make sure your stockings are fastened for her take-off in Vanity Airlines.
