How China Plunders
The oceans are dying and China’s unrestrained, massive fishing fleets are one of the biggest culprits. China has fishing vessels spread across the world, not just the China Sea, and is truly No. 1 on the index of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
According to the Global Initiative of Transnational Organized Crime, China’s distance-water fishing fleet is easily the largest in the world with an estimated 17,000 vessels and 183 of these are suspected in unregulated improprieties, and those are just the ones we know about. The vessels are difficult to track because they turn off transponders, fail to fill out mandated log records, create fake joint ventures with other boats or fly under the flag of other countries.
