Gaudete

This Christmas carol has remained in vogue for more than 400 years, as it first appeared in print in a Swedish/Finnish collection of sacred songs published in 1582. Steeleye Span hit the pop charts in 1973 with the British band’s a cappella rendition of “Gaudete,” sung in the original Latin. “Gaudete” translates as “Rejoice,” and the refrain goes “Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born/(Out) Of the Virgin Mary — rejoice!”
