Sugar’s Sweetheart Deal
Everytime you buy anything made of sugar, you’re getting ripped off by a group of clever businessmen who lobby your politicians to pass special laws for sugar. Turns out the biggest welfare recipients in America are politically connected corporations, Among the most notorious is the sugar industry, which receives billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies. Yet the industry runs TV ads denying the aid.
Ross Marchand of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance adamantly disagrees. “Sugar producers will get bailed out by U.S. taxpayers if prices fall below the ‘right level,'” he says. Marchand fleshes out the problem with consumer journalist and Libertarian pundit John Stossel.
