Is This Why They Hate Trump?
Barbara Boyd of Promethean Updates examines the shared drive of the United States and Russia to cooperate and develop the Arctic, versus efforts by the European Union to provoke conflict and foment war. The EU under Commission President Ursula von der Leyden claims the Arctic is “not someone else’s frontier. It’s part of the European Union.” And in Montreal, during the EU-Canada Summit, von der Leyden emphasizes that the principles defended in Ukraine include “also the Arctic.”
Does the European Union want to cooperate on the Arctic, or simply to carve up Russia as NATO presses its expansion to Russia’s border? Are peace overtures behind Putin and Trump throwing a monkey wrench into the plans for World War III? Does the European Union want to gain control over Russia’s vast resources?
Russia and Canada actually control most of the Arctic, with the United States having a big say with Alaska and Greenland. The European Union’s bloc of the Arcric — Norway, Sweden and Finland — is much smaller by comparison. The Arctic fight boils down to who’s going to control the lion’s share of the rare earth reserves and fossil fuels across this frozen region. Boyd bridges the conflicts, both historical as well as those motivating nations nowadays.
She closes with a note from Russia’s JFK file on the “Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge”, James W. Douglass’s “JFK and the Unspeakable”, Kennedy’s call for a joint expedition to the Moon, and the Arctic as humanity’s last great frontier.
