STELLA CHUU

Burlesque performer and cosplayer extraordinaire, Stella Chuu has a passion for all things geeky — video games, anime, comic books and pop culture. She says the fantasy world of cosplay holds the same appeal for her as burlesque. “Being able to express that I love my body is an exhilarating feeling. I can show people that I am a sexual and powerful being. I am able to become any character that I want. All eyes are on me and I control what they see.”

Based out of New York City, Chuu combines burlesque and cosplay. Here she is in Santiago, Chile.

SCARLETT JAMES

This blonde bombshell from Montreal turns the spotlight on the glamour of burlesque. Her feathered and bejeweled costumes are exquisite to behold, but, of course, she looks even more radiant after she’s taken them off. She’s enamored with vintage burlesque and enjoys creating grandiose, spectacular shows. Little wonder she’s in hot demand around the world, from Shanghai to Paris, from Berlin to Chicago.

Here she is wowing and working up the crowd at the Windy City Burlesque Fest in 2010. For such a demure damsel, she sure slides and glides with ease, quickly transforming into a dynamo.

ROXY DIAMOND

Raised in Switzerland and now based in Berlin, Roxy Diamond embarked on a career in burlesque after coming to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which counts Grace Kelly and Katharine Hepburn among its alumni. Her performances are often filled with movie references. She has an original act “Bates Motel” that pays homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and another show, “Eyes Wide Shut,” inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s kinky thriller. Even so, Roxy is perhaps most celebrated for her Champagne Glass acts. She takes a dip here at the International Burlesque Circus in Utrecht, Netherlands.

We’d show you one of her movie acts, except none can be seen online, although a trailer exists for “Bates Motel” on YouTube. In the absence of same, here’s a fan dance by Roxy, set to Billie Holiday’s blues ballad “Love me or Leave Me,” and performed at the Plaza in Zurich, Switzerland.

ROXI D’LITE

Hailing from Windsor, Ontario, in the Great Frozen North of Canada, Roxi D’Lite has established a rep as one of the bad girls of burlesque. She describes herself as “The Drinkin’ Smokin’ Strippin’ Machine,” and burnished her bad-girl cred by starring in the film Burlesque Assassins. Be that as it may, Roxi is often most alluring when she sheds the raunchy persona. She can be dreamboat-sweet, too, as in her erotic act, “Junglesque,”  with an aerial climax, performed at The Orleans Casino for the Viva Las Vegas Festival.

But Roxi would not be Roxi unless she was purr-fecting something naughty, as in this act called “Fetish Feline.” That latex outfit she’s wearing would put Catwoman to shame, regardless of whether you’re talking Eartha Kitt or Julie Newmar.

MISSY MALONE

Scotland’s most celebrated burlesque artist, Missy Malone, isn’t a good fan dancer. She’s a fantastic one. But the fans are only a small part of her stage arsenal. For an act she calls “The Bride,” paying homage to the 1935 movie The Bride of Frankenstein, she dances using that silts that transform her into a towering, nine-foot figure. She also does a champagne-themed balloon dance and impersonates a gambling cowgirl in “Ace of Spades.”

To get a sense of her elaborate costumes and stage props, check out this routine called “Jack Frost,” performed at Burlescapades, hosted by the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland.

From an early age, Missy was inspired by classic American pin-up artwork, particularly WWII airplane nose art. This passion is evident in “The Military Strip,” a duet she performed with Leyla Rose at The Arches in Glasgow, Scotland.

MISS DAKOTA

Miss Dakota, aka Dakota Ferreiro, studied Russian ballet and Latin ballroom dancing before turning her talents to burlesque. Born in the Bronx, of Puerto Rican and German heritage, she now is a headline dancer in Las Vegas and Hollywood, where she operates the Miss Dakota Burlesque Academy. She has her own troupe of performers, Miss Dakota’s Burlesque All Stars, and even a burlesque body work-out that she has taught around the country, allowing participants to unleash “their inner bombshell.”

To get a sense of her intoxicating performance skills, here she’s doing a Gypsy Rose Burlesque, presented by Dollhouse Entertainment.

MICHELLE L’AMOUR

The reigning queen of the Chicago burlesque scene, Michelle L’Amour uses the tagline “The Ass That Goes POW!” After you’ve seen her video “Butthoven’s 5th Symphony,” you’ll fully grasp that marketing hook. She grew up in Orland Park, Ill., and began performing burlesque at age 22 while studying finance at the University of Illinois. Now, she applies her business skills toward her dance career.

She operates her own academy, the Studio L’Amour, and tours the world teaching the L’Amour Method. She appeared on the French TV show, “France’s Got Talent,” as well as its American counterpart and Fox’s “A Current Affair.” Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson describes himself as “a huge fan.” She also won the title of Miss Exotic World 2005 with her Snow White routine.

Without any further ado,  here’s her classical nod to Beethoven.

MELODY MANGLER

With her flaming red hair and her comedic flair, Vancouver’s Melody Mangler has been called “a cross between Lili St. Cyr and Lucille Ball.” Melody’s a dynamo and a fireball, for sure, who incorporates singing, dancing and comedy into her shows. She can be silly — as you’d expect from the artistic director of the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society — but also as sultry as they come. Take a peep at her Little Bo Peep striptease presented at the 2011 Toronto Burlesque Festival.

MARLENE VON STEENVAG

One of the world’s great fan dancers, Germany’s Marlene Von Steenvag often evokes the high, theatrical glamour of the Moulin Rouge or Las Vegas. Her costumes are showy and elaborate, but she also has a naughty side, exploring the realm of fetishes. In this act, which she calls “Pan’s Dream,” she fashions an entirely fresh fantasy world. The video was shot in Vienna at the Cirque Rouge No. 10, in January 2011.

Having singled out her fan dances, we would be remiss not to present one of them. Here, she works the fans, and her fans, in a segment from her larger show “Bird of Paradise,” staged in late 2011 in Berlin.

LUNA ROSA

Statuesque and exotic, Luna Rosa toys with the taboo, performing as darkly mysterious women — say, a voodoo priestess, an Egyptian queen or an Amazon goddess. She’s based in London, but has toured extensively throughout Europe, Latin America and, more recently, the United States.

She told one interviewer, “I watched a lot of Cuban and Mexican cinema, so performers such as Tongolele, Amalia Aguilar and Ninon Sevilla play a big part in my imagination when it comes to choreographing routines and deciding on the kind of costumes I want to use. I have an act called `Amor Voodoo’, which is based on a dance scene where Ninon Sevilla is dancing on some drums – the drums are my favorite instrument, and this is such a powerful routine.”

She conjures up the aura of a smoke-filled nightclub full of hot dames and dangerous men in this live act from the Old Vic Tunnels in London.

Luna Rosa, whose father was Egyptian, also has an act she calls “The Perfidious Naked Fez.”
