Egypt Wants Pardon for Sheik

Egypt’s new President Mohammed Morsi has now made official what has been rumored for many months: He will ask President Obama to pardon the blind Egyptian Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, who is serving a life sentence in the United States for the 1993 World Trade Center attack.

Morsi can ask, but Obama would be wise to deny the request. The 1993 bombings orchestrated by The Blind Sheik and his nine co-conspirators served as the warmup act for the most heinous terrorist assault ever mounted on American soil. If Obama grants this pardon, he might as well erect a billboard at Ellis Island inviting every last murdering low-life around the world free access to prey on Americans.

It also would be insincerity of the highest order if Obama denies the pardon, but agrees to transfer The Blind Sheik into Egyptian custody on “humanitarian grounds.” The Al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya terrorist might be old, 74, and blind, but neither negates the severity of his sedition.

Morsi: Egypt’s New Pharoah

Bassem Youssef, an Egyptian TV satirist in the vein of Jon Stewart, is being prosecuted under a new law that forbids anyone from insulting Egypt’s leaders. Looks like Egypt’s new President Mohammed Morsi might be even more thin-skinned and dictatorial than the deposed Hosni Mubarak.  Progress!

Egyptian Constitution Belly Flop

The new Egyptian constitution imposing Sharia law continues to arouse the ire of democratic-minded reformers. After leading an Egyptian blogger and two Femen cohorts to strip outside the Egyptian embassy in Sweden (see post titled “Nude Protest Greets Egyptians”), the constitution has now inspired a belly dancer to pen a satirical ditty bemoaning the lack of women’s rights under the new Morsi government. Egyptian Coup Spurs Debate

In a first of its kind move, the head of the European parliament has asked the European Union to stop supporting Egypt following Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi’s decree to expand his power above the courts. Martin Schultz said the EU should not condone what he called a coup.

Just last week, Morsi awarded himself sweeping powers, and the Islamist-dominated constitutional assembly rushed through a draft charter based on Sharia law that critics say could leave women and ethnic minorities vulnerable. Protests have continued to rage over Morsi’s decision and despite international debate over the new draft constitution, the Obama administration has so far declined to criticize it.

Egyptian Opposition Unites

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi’s move last week to greatly expand his powers has galvanized opponents of his ruling party, the Muslim Brotherhood. Now, the opposition parties are burying the hatchet, coming together and mobilizing mass street protests, seeking to preserve Egypt’s fragile democracy. H/T Wall Street Journal

Cairo Protests Turn Violent

Opponents of Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi fought with members of the Muslim Brotherhood on Friday in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. The outbreak of street violence, which reportedly left 41 injured,  was the largest and angriest clash between these rival camps since Morsi took office. The Islamists faced off against liberals and so-called soccer “hooligans,” throwing stones and bottles at each other, and sometimes engaging in hand-to-hand brawls. Police didn’t intervene. The specific catalyst for this riot: A court ruling last week that acquitted former Egyptian officials who had ordered a camel and horseback charge against protesters leading last year’s uprising to oust Hosni Mubarak.

They Want to Kill Us

Blind Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman

Dwight Schultz, one of Hollywood’s few outspoken conservatives, reveals the true catalyst behind the current tidal wave of Islamic unrest — a campaign by Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi trying to force the United States to release mass murderer Omar Abdel Rahman. Often referred to as “The Blind Sheik,” Rahman served as the emir, or leader, of Gama ‘at al-Islam, the radical Egyptian organization that assassinated President Anwar Sadat and staged a brutal 1997 massacre at Luxor, Egypt, that left 62 tourists and police officers dead. Rahman is serving a life sentence in US custody for his role in forming a terrorist cell in New York City that perpetrated the first bombing of the World Trade Center on Feb. 26, 1993, and murdered Jewish Defense League founder Meir Kahane.

Hani Nour Eldin

Why would President Morsi think the United States might grant clemency to a convicted assassin and terrorist? Because President Obama recently issued a visa to Hani Nour Eldin, a member of The Blind Sheik’s fanatical Islamic Group, waiving federal laws forbidding his travel to the United States, so Eldin could come to Washington, DC, to petition for Rahman’s release.

Thus, Obama is now reaping what he sowed, unleashing a demon genie from a bottle because of a failed diplomatic overture involving an attempt to appease murderers and thugs. Take it from Dwight Schultz, who portrayed Capt. “Howling Mad” Murdock on The A-Team and later Reginald Barclay on Star Trek: The Next Generation. H/T Front Page Magazine

UPDATE: Glenn Beck is reporting negotiations between the US State Department and the Egyptian government to transfer custody of The Blind Sheik to Egypt on humanitarian and health grounds. One source says the move is part of an Obama apology for the Mohammed movie.
