Panda’s Roots in Spain
The giant panda might not have originated in China, after all. Paleontologists have found fossil teeth near the city of Zaragoza, Spain, for an 11 million-year-old species believed to be the oldest known relative of the panda. The ancient species, dubbed Agriarctos beatrix, lived in a humid forest region and weighed only 130 pounds, making it more petite than the smallest living bear species, the sun bear. To escape predators, including bear dogs and giant, sabre-toothed cats, this prehistoric bear most likely spent a lot of time aloft in trees. H/T Next Media Animation
