Chariots Of The Gods

Were the gods revered by long-ago civilizations actually gods or could they have been astronauts from faraway planets? Did these visitors teach early-day man advanced secrets about the solar system and the larger universe?

Here is the Oscar-nominated 1970 documentary film based on the book by Erich von Däniken, a Swiss author who helped to popularize the notion that paleo civilizations on Earth had gained knowledge through contact with ancient astronauts.

Although the narration is sometimes staid, perhaps a bit dated nowadays, one would be hard-pressed to find a more comprehensive survey, spanning the globe from Easter Island and the Great Pyramid at Giza to the Mayan hub at Chichen Itza and Peru’s mysterious Nazca Lines. The expected coterie of academic critics have challenged von Däniken, but notice how none of these debunkers can explain how early man carved the massive pyramids and stone sculptures in the first place, let alone tell us how they ferried these gargantuan monuments, in certain cases, several hundred miles across scorching deserts.

This is the third installment in our five-week series The Heavens Opened Above. Please return next week for another installment. We’ll be focusing on Michael Tellinger, a South African explorer and journalist whose studies have been heavily influenced by theories on ancient astronauts advanced by the late Zecharia Sitchin.

Here There Be Dragons

The richest source of evidence for the existence of a real race of dragons is not paleontology or even evolutionary biology but, rather, mythology. Dragons have shadowed the dreams of nearly every culture on Earth, from ancient Greece to Babylon, India, China, even the New World. Since their initial appearance on the Earth in ancient times, dragons have become a part of our collective unconscious. Are these fabulous beasts a figment of our collective-imagination, or did they actually exist? More from Zohar StarGate.

Then There Were Giants

Dr. Mike Wilkerson joins Sarah Westall to discuss his fascinating work looking at geology from a new perspective. He has discovered an extensive amount of evidence showing that many of the rocks that surround us are actually petrified organs. While the full science has not been proven yet, there remains a mounting pool of facts that cannot be disputed. This is a fascinating look at a whole new perspective in geology.

Shape-Shifting Dinosaurs

In a spellbinding presentation, Vancouver paleontologist Jack Horner explains what many perceive as shape-shifting dinosaurs are actually growth spurts in juveniles. The shocking secret, Horner says, was revealed by slicing into the fossilized skulls of these baby dinosaurs and comparing them to the adults. He explains further in this episode of Ted Talks.

Ghostly Lineage of Big Cats

Paleontologists know pretty much everything about the big cats that roam our planet, but the most illusive aspect of these magnificent creatures is their heritage. All of today’s big cat species evolved more than 11 million years ago, yet their evolutionary history remains a mystery. But scientists have recently discovered a major clue about their origins, one that could provide a whole new starting place for solving this puzzle. Get the lowdown in this edition of PBS Eons.

Extinction That Never Happened

Natural history is full of living things that were long thought to have gone extinct, only to show up alive and well. Paleontologists called these organisms Lazarus taxa and many of them vanished 500 million years ago at the end of the Cambrian Period. But did they really vanish? Host Hank Green tells their story in this edition of PBS Eons.

Did Language Evolve in Caves?

Written language, the hallmark of human civilization, didn’t just suddenly appear one day. Thousands of years before the first fully developed writing systems, our ancestors scrawled geometric signs across the walls of the caves they sheltered in. Paleoanthropologist and rock art researcher Genevieve von Petzinger has studied and codified these ancient markings in caves across Europe. The uniformity of her findings suggest that graphic communication, and the ability to preserve and transmit messages beyond a single moment in time, may be much older than we think. Von Petzinger shares her research in a Ted Talk.

Dino Talk

Vsauce host Michael Stevens welcomes world-renowned paleontologist Jack Horner and Jurassic World actor Chris Pratt to talk dinosaurs. More specifically, to dispel long-held myths, how a branch of the species exists to this day and a possible return of the Jurassic giants in the distance future.

How Many Dino Fossils Exist?

Has the age of dinosaur-fossil discovery passed us by. Not quite, say paleontologists, who are wondering how many species of dinosaurs are there to discover and how many fossils of them are out there.

Host Michael Aranda says the first dinosaur fossil was discovered in 1824, and over the next 150 years, paleontologists only found an average of one fossil a year. Now we’re finding an average of 15 per year. Aranda says that paleontologists calculate that between 2069 and 2102 we will have found 75 percent of the dinosaur genera, and by the mid-22nd century, 90 percent.

Tune in as Aranda explains in this edition of SciShow.

Missing Link Discovered

The discovery of a fossil dating back 419 million years has thrown paleontologists and evolutionary scientists into a frenzy. Turns out that the fossil, known as entelognathus, is a crucial missing link of the sea. SourceFed’s Joe Bereta sorts out the details.
