Vintage Ayn Rand

SALUTE TO AYN RAND

Ayn Rand’s famous TV appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson surfaced earlier this summer, and now a second vintage Rand interview has been published for the first time on YouTube. In this March 1974 interview with James Day, host of the PBS show Day at Night, Rand discusses:

  • Her views on the ideal man.
  • Concepts of charity, sacrifice, romantic love and selfishness.
  • Why she finds all religions false.
  • How her upbringing in Russia, as well as her time in Hollywood, influenced her thinking and her writing.

Free Market Revolution

SALUTE TO AYN RAND

Did Ayn Rand provide a path to economic prosperity? Yaron Brook, author of Free Market Revolution: How Ayn Rand’s Ideas Can End Big Government and executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute, believes so, and tells Bill Whittle why in a special PJTV interview. Among the many topics Brook covers: the housing crisis, government spending and the roots of the current economic stagnation.

Paul Ryan for VP

Mitt Romney named US Rep Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as his vice presidential running mate Saturday morning in Norfolk, Va. The announcement was made in front of the USS Wisconsin, with Romney vowing to present solutions to the nation’s economic woes “that are bold, specific and achievable.” He further pledged, “We offer our commitment to create 12 million new jobs and bring better take home pay to middle class families.”

Ryan, 42, serves as chairman of the House Budget Committee and has been identified with efforts to rein in federal spending and control entitlement costs. He is a conservative, pro-life, Irish-German Catholic from Janesville, Wis. He and his wife, Janna, have three children — Elizabeth, Charles and Samuel. He once said, “The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand.”

Earlier this year, Ryan outlined how the Republicans could win back the White House in 2012, while delivering the keynote address at the George W. Bush Presidential Center’s Tax Policies for 4% Growth conference at the New York Historical Society.

Ayn Rand Vs. Big Government

“The government is the biggest violator of our rights today.” That’s the word from Yaron Brook, co-author of Free Market Revolution and president of the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights.

At FreedomFest 2012, Reason.TV’s Matt Welch sat down with Brook to discuss why big government hurts the poor and how Ayn Rand inspired the Tea Party. Rand is as popular today as ever, Brook says, noting that 1.5 million copies of her novel Atlas Shrugged have sold since President Barack Obama’s election in 2008.

Ayn Rand on The Tonight Show

One pictures Ayn Rand promoting her principles of Objectivism at intellectual salons. But one of her most stimulating conversations occurred in a truly popular forum — The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. VHS tapes capturing excerpts of the 1967 appearance resurfaced this week and while the quality is hit-or-miss, the occasion was certainly momentous.

Carson was duly impressed. So much so that he canceled a scheduled appearance by Buster Crabbe that evening, and devoted his entire show to the Russian-born thinker with the thick accent and deep philosophy. TV viewers responded in kind. Rand generated more mail than any other Tonight Show guest, nearly all of it positive, although she touched upon several controversial positions — opposing the Vietnam War and a conscripted army, for instance, and discussing her atheism.
