Government Bullies
In light of a number clashes between business owners and government bullies during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdowns, consumer/investigative reporter John Stossel asks, “Who gets to open, who doesn’t?” And, he adds, “What happens when politicians cheat?”
Case in point is Dallas car-wash owner Jim Davenport, who says he was shut down for no apparent reason. Dallas politicians crushed his life’s work, blaming his car wash for high crime and citing Davenport’s own 911 calls as evidence. They then re-zoned his business to destroy it. Davenport says he complied with several seemingly unreasonable requests from the City Council for years, building an 8-foot fence when asked for a 6-footer, adding more signs and installing more lighting. All to no avail.
The city then demanded that Davenport hire security for the car wash. He complied, but was admonished for not hiring a firm that was owned by one of the council members. Government corruption at its finest! “They murdered my business,” he says.
In this episode of John Stossel TV, Stossel checks in with Davenport and his plans for fighting the abuse.
