Will Fraudsters Go To Alcatraz?

Are we going to see more arrests in cases of fraud and money laundering, as well as white-collar crimes?

President Donald Trump gave us a clue this might be coming. This past Friday, he put forward a new budget proposal, calling for $152 million to reopen the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The infamous prison atop an island in the San Francisco Bay has been closed since 1963, although it continues to be operated as a tourist site by Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

While it was up and running, Alcatraz had one of the most notorious reputations of any American prison. The strong tidal currents around the island and frigid water temperatures made escape nearly impossible.

Why is Alcatraz needed unless there’s going to be an uptick in the number of incarcerated criminals? Will white collar criminals go there, or will they be shifted to another site, say, a site that’s currently housing truly violent criminals that could be Alcatraz bound?
