Strange Facts About the Titanic

Although the Titanic sank more than 100 years ago, most people today are aware of this unthinkable tragedy. What they don’t know is what really occurred on board. Take the adventure of Violet Jessop, a nurse aboard the Titanic, who miraculously survived the disaster. She also survived the sinking of the Britannic–Titanic’s sister ship–years later in the Aegean Sea. But there’s more. Jessop was a passenger on the RMS Olympic, the eldest of the sister ships, when it collided with a British warship. Though it didn’t sink, it was remarkable that Jessop was on board all three unlucky ships. This is just one of 10 strange facts about the Titanic in the following episode of Top Trending.

Explosion Sank the Titanic

Armenian Vaghinak Byurat, one of the lucky survivors of the Titanic disaster, claims it was an explosion, not an iceberg, that was responsible for the sinking of the legendary ship. The 25-year-old publicist, who attempted to swim to safety while the Titantic sank, woke up hours later on the deck of the RMS Carpathia, a passenger steamship that rescued 712 survivors from lifeboats and the sea. Later, in his memoirs, Byurat never mentioned an iceberg but always spoke of an explosion, presumably coming from the ship’s hull.

Other theories point to a fire in the hull before the ship set sail that led to an explosion, while some believe a German U-boat in the area was responsible for the eventual sinking of the ship. Follow Byurat’s amazing tale of survival and his theory on this episode of Bright Side.

Truth About the Titanic

Was the ill-fated Titanic really taken down by a massive iceberg? That’s the likely story, but many survivors would beg to differ, including Armenian publicist Vaghinak Byurat, who later wrote about the catastrophe in his memoirs, never mentioning an iceberg. Byurat describes that he and his cabin mates heard an explosion on the night of the fateful journey, and later speculation pointed to a possible fire in the hull as the culprit. Tune in as Bright Side brings us Byurat’s amazing story, as well as some other troubling theories that may have contributed to the end of the world’s most famous ship.

Sinking of the Titanic

What if the Titanic was sunk to start the Federal Reserve? When the Titanic sank in the frozen northern waters of the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, the passengers on board included three of the richest men in America, all of whom had been outspoken against the creation of the Federal Reserve. They included John Jacob Astor IV, reportedly the richest man in America at the time; Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy’s Department Store, and Benjamin Guggenheim, a powerful mining magnate.

Two others who were scheduled to be on the Titanic but cancelled at the last minute: Milton Hershey (of the Hershey fortune), and- wait for it- J.P. Morgan, new owner of the White Star Line, which built the Titanic, and not coincidentally, drafted the Federal Reserve Act at Jekyll Island. The act got passed into legislation the following year. Not insignificantly, Astor was also a close friend of Nikola Tesla, whose plan in creating electricity had been for it to be free to everyone.
