Teachers Targeted in Thailand

Running a daily school is a dangerous business in southern Thailand. More than 150 teachers have been slain in the region, where ethnic tensions often boil over into bloody violence. The threat has escalated in recent months, as Britain’s Channel 4 News reports.

Pakistan’s Shameful Killings

They’re called “honor” killings, but there’s nothing honorable about the brutal, point-blank murder of women and children condoned in Pakistan and other predominantly Muslim countries. Jonathan Rugman, foreign affairs correspondent for Channel 4 in Great Britain, reports on one such case. Warning: The content is both shocking and disturbing.

Protests Spread in Tunisia

The murder of Tunisia’s opposition leader has triggered widespread protests and prompted the prime minister to form a new government. The prime minister announced an interim cabinet of technocrats would replace his Islamist-led coalition. The gunning down of Chokri Belaid led to the shakeup.

Timbuktu Freed from Islamists

French and Malian troops have liberated Timbuktu and driven out Islamists who had imposed strict Sharia laws. But the al-Qaeda-linked extremists left their mark as they retreated in defeat — torching a library that contained irreplaceable manuscripts and relics hundreds of years old. It’s not yet known have many volumes were lost. It’s also unclear where these Arab Spring insurgents will head next to share their enlightened views.

Islamists Want Global Caliphate

Ismail Al-Wahwah, spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir in Australia, predicts the establishment of a global Islamic caliphate, with Sharia laws enforced around the world and Arabic taught in every school, other “foreign” languages allowed only in universities.

Founded in 1953, Hizb ut-Tahrir is a Sunni, pan-Islamic political party with chapters in some 40 countries. The group argues against democracy, and believes non-Muslims should be treated as second-class citizens, unable to hold office or to vote. In the West, Hizb ut-Tahrir is particularly active in Great Britain, with a growing presence in North America. H/T MEMRI TV

Growing Sunni Unrest in Iraq

Iraq’s Sunni minority, who controlled the country before the US invasion, are once again flexing their muscles seeking a greater share of political power. Gunfire has wounded at least two people at a demonstration in Iraq’s Sunni-dominated western province of Anbar. Deputy Prime Minister Saleh al-Mutlaq traveled to the region in an attempt to defuse sectarian tensions.

French Rally Behind Free Speech

The French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo — which is already famous internationally for publishing cartoons of the Muslim prophet Mohammed — has declared its intention to publish an educational comic book biography of the life of Islam’s founder. The announcement is the latest satirical shot fired in an ongoing international battle over the boundaries of free speech. It’s a battle being fought between Islamic fundamentalists and liberal Western societies.
