Why Celebs Walk Red Carpets?
Why do celebrities walk down red carpets at special events like the Oscars or the Golden Globes? Here, Today I Found Out gives us a conventional history of royalty and celebrities walking red carpets.
Aeschylus (525 BC – 455 BC), the Greek “father of tragedy,” wrote various plays where his heroes fell from grace due to a combination of unwinnable circumstances, arrogance and/or simply stepping on the gods’ toes. One of those heroes, Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, walked to his death along a red carpet.
Hollywood picked up the trail in 1922 when a red carpet was laid at the entrance to Sid Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre for the premiere of Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks.
Today I Found Out bypasses this point, but we wonder why Hollywood embraced these red carpets? Did the stars want to feel like royalty? Was it all for show, or did the carpets symbolize a deeper secret?
