WatchMojo features the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom, creatures that are known to possess smarts that may even remind us of human intelligence at times. Looks like the Democrats have a new area of tax to explore: taxes against farming, and particularly animal farming, to prevent climate change. Sen. The near-apocalypse at the end of the Paleozoic Era, or The Great Dying, was the most severe extinction event in planet’s history, wiping out 96 percent of marine life and 70 percent of terrestrial vertebrae species. Fortunately, the reptiles were among the survivors of the massacre, emerging as humble creatures but soon growing into some of the largest lifeforms to ever dominate land, sea and sky. Their prehistoric dominance on Earth came to be known as the Age of Reptiles and unfolded during the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic Era. Just like the names of products and companies, animal monikers can affect how we feel about them. Take the tricolored dogs of Africa. At the turn of the 20th century, ranchers regularly shot them because they feared the dogs were slaughtering livestock, and disdainfully started calling them wild dogs. The name stuck and the canines’ population declined. Their name was later changed to painted dogs and their genus was revived, proving that changing the name of a species can actually save it. Narrator Kate Yoshida presents some other examples of negative animal names and their affect in this episode of Minute Earth.

Part of our fascination with dinosaurs is their size. Shaking the earth from the Jurassic to Cretaceous periods, some dinos reached the height of a five-story building. But how did they get so huge? And why did mammals get the short end of the stick? Host Hank Green has some answers in this edition of PBS Eons.

My parents found this kinda uncanny valley plush while they were on holiday. The brand is Hansa, if anyone is interested in searching for one for themselves. I had it on my desk at work and everyone who walked past got a fright thinking I’d brought a real bird into the office! More from Alex the Honking Bird!
