Property, Law = Prosperity

There’s no arguing that the United States is the most powerful and prosperous country in the world. So, asks investigative reporter John Stossel, why hasn’t the power to prosper spread to other nations. Hernando DeSoto, of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, tells Stossel the answer lies in the rule of law and property rights. “The rules of the game have to say and recognize who really owns what,” DeSoto says. “Because how you relate to the assets you have determines how you relate to your neighbor and the rest of the world.” DeSoto explains in more detail in this edition of Liberty Pen.

Gridlock is Good

Political commentator and investigative reporter John Stossel unabashedly admits that we’re better off when we have gridlock in Congress. Imagine that.
“Bipartisanship brings us some of our worst laws,” says Stossel. “People say that they hate Congress, and they are right to hate Congress. It’s filled with pandering opportunists, that when those opportunists get together in bipartisanship, they pass awful rules.” Listen in to the rest of Stossel’s logic.

Debating Crime in America

Urban Institute Senior Fellow John Ronan says crime in America has decreased significantly since exploding in the ’70s and ’80s. “Crime declined in the ’90s, sort of stayed the same in the last decade, and in the last six or seven years it’s declined again, and that story is just not getting told,” Ronan tells investigative reporter John Stossel. On the other side of the coin, Fox News Health.com managing editor Dr. Manny Alvarez chimes in that crime and drug use are on the rise. So what gives? Listen to the lively debate in this edition of Liberty Pen.

Our Politically Correct Military

Investigative reporter John Stossel says he’s happy with our military keeping us safe from foreign attack and satisfied that we’re–for the most part–at peace in this ever-crazy world. But Stossel points out that it seems that our military is more preoccupied with environmentalism and political correctness. Afghanistan war veteran Aaron MacLean joins Stossel in this edition of Liberty Pen to discuss if it’s appropriate for our military to pursue green energy schemes and whether it is the proper venue to conduct experiments on political correctness.

A Taxing Migration

As heavier tax burdens across country put the squeeze on hard-working Americans, many of them are voting with their feet and taking their wallets, according to Travis L. Brown, author of How Money Walks. Brown tells John Stossel of Liberty Pen, “We’re looking at the movement of Americans and their income, measured by the Internal Revenue Service data files since 1992 to 2010. ” Brown says majority of the migration is to no income tax states, such as Texas, Nevada and Florida, while heavier-taxed states like California and New York are in a financial tailspin.

Flat Tax is the Answer

Consumer reporter John Stossel says our tax code is so complex that most Americans pay someone for help. The tax code, which dates back to 1913, now is a convoluted monstrosity of  75,000 pages of  rules and regulations sure to drive a tax accountant nuts. The solution–a flat tax. Forbes magazine Editor-in-Chief Steve Forbes, an ardent proponent of the flat tax, spells out its benefits to Stossel in this edition of Liberty Pen.

Regulating Regulation

Veteran consumer reporter and investigative journalist John Stossel says most of the regulation put forth by government is practically useless. “Politicians claim more laws are the answer,” says Stossel. “But this cripples our future. Don’t they see the damage regulation causes.” In this edition of Liberty Pen, Stossel sells the notion that reputation and the free market gives us more regulation than bureaucrats deploying government force.

Legal Parasites

Fox News consumer reporter John Stossel discusses how the lawsuit industry provokes frivolous lawsuits, squashes innovation, drives up costs and makes Americans less safe. The case in point in this report was Blitz USA from Oklahoma, a manufacturer of red gas cans, which was forced to shut down and layoff 117 employees after 50 years in business. Stossel presents both sides of the disaster from the CEO and the attorneys in this edition of Liberty Pen.
