The South’s GOP Transformation

Once upon a time, the Democrats were the party of slavery, segregation and Jim Crow, and the Republicans embraced emancipation and racial integration. Democrats were the party of the Confederacy in the South and Republicans were the Union of the North. Then the 1960s came and everything  switched. Suddenly, the Republicans were tagged as the racists and the Democrats were the so-called champions of civil rights. So what happened? Enter left-leaning academics and journalists, who perpetrated the false narrative that Republicans couldn’t win an election by appealing to the better nature of the country, so they courted the worst. Former professor of political science at Vanderbilt University Carol Swain says this fairy tale and other myths contributed to the incessant lies of the left. She says the transformation occurred because the values of Southerners changed to espousing pro-life, pro-gun and pro-small government. Swain reviews the timeline of the transformation and debunks the myths in this episode of PragerU.

BLM A Marxist Movement

Black Lives Matter is run by Marxist organizers. They have not been silent about their agenda to dismantle the nuclear family, transform gender/sexual identity and force radical change. So why are so many eagerly following along? Conservative educator Carol Swain, who taught political science and law at Vanderbilt University and was a tenured professor at Princeton, says bluntly, “I believe the organization is using black people to advance a Marxist agenda and the corporations, the schools, the churches and the people that have gotten behind Black Lives Matter, they think their helping and showing support for black people, but actually it’s the opposite.” Appearing with host Will Witt on PragerU, Swain dissects the BLM movement that has taken center stage in America.

The Myth of the GOP South

Anyone with a high school education knows the Democrats are the party of slavery and Jim Crow, while the Republicans favored emancipation and integration. Despite this schism in ideology, the South voted in droves for the Democrats for decades. Today, the tables have turned and now Southerners vote Republican. So why the flip-flop?

Democrats, who have steadily gravitated to the far left, were quick to pounce on the race card, the alleged GOP’s disenchantment with the Civil Rights Act and its adherence to “The Southern Strategy,” which simply meant win elections by pandering to bigots. All myths, says Carol Swain, professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University. “Don’t buy it. History has moved on. Like other regions of the country, the South votes values, not skin color.” She elaborates further in this edition of PragerU.
