Timbuktu Freed from Islamists

French and Malian troops have liberated Timbuktu and driven out Islamists who had imposed strict Sharia laws. But the al-Qaeda-linked extremists left their mark as they retreated in defeat — torching a library that contained irreplaceable manuscripts and relics hundreds of years old. It’s not yet known have many volumes were lost. It’s also unclear where these Arab Spring insurgents will head next to share their enlightened views.

Al-Qaeda’s Bloody Footprints

Inside video footage shot by a security firm paints a disturbing portrait of the terror faced by hostages in the Algerian gas plant overrun by al-Qaeda-linked militants. The video aired on Channel 4 in Great Britain, prompting the Foreign Minister to announce that counter-terrorism work in Algeria and other North African countries would intensify in the coming weeks.

Obama Empowered Extremists

Tawfik Hamid, an ex-jihadist and author from Egypt, says the United States has empowered radical Islamists by adopting a naive diplomatic approach in the Middle East. Hamid faults the Obama Administration for embracing “sudden democracy syndrome,” encouraging the downfall of longstanding regimes and siding with revolutionary forces throughout the region. The problem with that policy, asserts Hamid: Once the militants are in the driving seat, they won’t hesitate to violently turn against their Washington patrons, as evidenced by the brutal murder of the US ambassador in Libya.

Hamid is interviewed here by Russia Today, the Russian global TV network. The Russians have their own motives, of course, for wanting to apply the brakes to Islamic extremism. Not only is Russia flanked on its southern border by several predominantly Muslim nations, but Russia also has propped up Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in his civil war against a rebel alliance that includes militia connected to al-Qaeda.

Adam: Meet Your Virgin Drones

On the anniversary of 9-11, US-born jihadist Adam Gadahn invites his fellow Americans to soften their hearts, submit and surrender to Islam. Gadahn is al-Qaeda’s version of Tokyo Rose. The best this bearded douchebag can hope for in life is to meet 72 virgin drones as he descends the pits of Hell, where he rightfully belongs. H/T Blazing Cat Fur

Romney Condemns Mob Attacks

Republican GOP candidate Mitt Romney condemns the attacks on US embassies by mobs in Libya and Egypt, and criticizes the Obama administration for sending mixed messages regarding the attacks, failing to protect American values or to project American power. John Christopher Stevens, the US Ambassador to Libya, and three others were killed in the torching of the US consulate in Benghazi, the first murder of an American diplomat abroad since 1979. The assaults came on the anniversary of the 9-11 demolition of the World Trade Center in New York City, also perpetrated by Islamic extremists. Only six US ambassadors have been killed in the line of duty, the last being Adolph Dubs in Afghanistan in 1979.

Here is footage of the attack in Cairo. After scaling the embassy wall, the protesters took down the US flag and tore it into shreds. They raised a black al-Qaeda flag bearing the inscription “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet.” Egyptian police later dispersed the crowd.

In Benghazi, Libya, the mob torched the US consulate. Ambassador Stevens died from asphyxiation. The three other Americans were shot, including two Marines protecting the US compound. Some of the “protesters” were bearing rocket-propelled grenade launchers.

Meanwhile, President Obama rejected a request to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, snubbing our strongest ally in the Middle East. Seems Obama’s date card is filled yapping with South Florida DJ Pimp with a Limp and David Letterman.

al-Qaeda Finds Refuge in Mali

al-Qaeda has a new refuge… the deserts of Northern Mali. This report captures the food crisis and exodus of half a million people, caused by the Islamist enactment of harsh Sharia Laws in the north of the country. There, al-Qaeda has driven out the struggling national army, seized their weapons and is now fly the al-Qaeda flag. “We’re frightened because there’s no government we can trust to protect us from the armed groups,” says Maulud Ibrahim, a Tuareg refugee.

“When we’ve conquered France, we’ll come to the USA, we’ll come to London and conquer the whole world,” says a military commander from the local al-Qaeda ally, Defenders of the Faith. For Tiebile Drame, the former Foreign Minister, the situation is getting serious. “The rest of the world should not stay just to look at the situation, we should be helped unless they would like to see another Somalia or another Afghanistan.” H/T Journeyman.TV

Diyala’s Dark Days

A local police chief in Iraq’s Diyala Province claims his officers have wiped out every vestige of al-Qaeda, but a journalist finds evidence that the insurgents are once again ramping up their operations. Not only have there been new incidents of suicide bombings, but also discoveries of hidden weapons caches on farms and in orchards.

One family was recently taken into custody as possible suspects, apparently with good reason. “She kept pushing me to wear explosive belts. ‘Wear the belt. You are a coward, you are a disgrace,'” the son tells the police. His mother weeps as she insists that she was coerced by al-Qaeda to give her sons up as suicide bombers. Another parent of an al-Qaeda murder victim paints a grim scenario. “They sent us a threat…leave or your destiny will be slaughter.”
