3I/Atlas: The Source Of “Wow?”

In a bombshell report, some astronomers and professors suggest that the interstellar object 3I/Atlas might be the source of the famous WOW signal detected by the Big Ear radio telescope.

The question remains: Why haven’t researchers checked whether it is currently broadcasting any signals? Some theorists speculate that such checks may have occurred, but the findings—especially if the frequencies match—are being concealed by NASA and SETI.

As 3I/Atlas approaches Mars, it is exhibiting behaviors that defy known physics and showing signs of maneuverability. Here’s more from the Edge of Wonder with Ben Chasteen and Rob Counts.

SETI Detects Alien Signal

Did we just get a greeting from Proxima Centauri? Scientists at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) confirm they’ve received an unusual alien signal from the Proxima Centauri system, the star closest to our sun.

What makes the discovery so exciting is the location of the solar system, which is home to an exoplanet in its habitable zone, and that it originated from the world’s biggest technosignature investigation project known as Breakthrough Listen, which collaborates with NASA to search for advanced extraterrestrial life. The signals were originally detected in early 2019, but scientist have just recently identified it. Here’s more with YouTuber Anton Petrov.

Space Race Heats Up

Humans  have been sending signals into the cosmos for more than 100 years, and the United States and China space programs appear to be upping the ante. In an attempt to position itself as a leader in space exploration, China in January completed the construction of a massive aperture spherical telescope to detect mysterious, fast radio bursts in its search for extraterrestrial life. The move has prompted a plan by our government to establish a bigger telescope on the surface of the Moon. The race for dominance in space has indeed intensified. Watching the Skies

Intelligent life barely exists on Earth. Can scientists ever find it beyond our planet?

The crew at the SETI Institute are certainly giving the search the old college try. SETI is shorthand for “Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” Headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., the institute does not receive any tax support, but relies exclusively on private contributions. Dr. Seth Shostak, senior astronomer, and Dr. Jill Tartar, the institute’s director, discuss their latest research initiatives.
