Naked in Times Square

Model Zoe West has won a $15,000 judgment against the City of New York after she claimed she was wrongfully arrested for staging a nude “body painting” performance in Times Square. She further charged that the police waited and watched the entire performance before hauling her off to the pokie. A judge ruled in her favor, upholding the legality of “artistic nudity” in NYC. What happens in Vegas, doesn’t always stay in Vegas. That’s apparent since photos of Prince Harry’s wild antics in Las Vegas have been splashed around the world. Perhaps Prince Harry will be taken to the woodshed by the Royal Family. But perhaps not, if the Facebook page “Support Prince Harry with a Naked Salute” has any sway. More than 20,000 British soldiers and supporters around the world have joined the page and many have uploaded pictures of their naked salutes.

Meanwhile, Guyism commentator Katie Nolan supports the cause, but says the movement is missing a golden opportunity by not putting its best foot — er, breast foot — forward. In The Guyism Speed Round, she says, “A bit of advice, ladies, if you want people to support your made-up cause of clothing equality, maybe find some girls that people want to see with their shirt off.” Be sure to stick around for her coverage of a newly discovered Amazonian species nicknamed “the penis snake.”

Women and the 2012 Election

With the economy in the doldrums, the Democrats are trying to reshape the debate by building their convention around other issues, like the trumped-up War on Women. “Forget about birth control pills. It’s the economy that’s the real contraceptive now,” says Greg Gutfeld on the Fox talk show The Five. “Birth rates are dropping because no one’s having kids in a dying economy. You want free birth control. It’s called misery.”

To Bare or Not?

Remember Drew Barrymore raising a ruckus when she strolled down a red carpet flashing a wild swath of armpit hair? Now, an American physician wants women to adopt the French “au naturale” look for their nether region as well.

The physician, Emily Gibson, claims the popular “Bare Down There” fashion increases the risk of infections and sexually transmitted diseases, so she’s opposed to women shaving, waxing, plucking or using laser treatments to remove their pubic hair. “Pubic hair does have a purpose, providing a cushion against friction that can cause skin abrasion and injury, and protection from bacteria,” she says. “It is time to declare a truce in the war on pubic hair and allow it to stay right where it belongs.”

Her call has spurred Taiwan’s Next Media Animation to poll its nearly 50,000 YouTube subscribers on the raging question of the day: “To Wax or Not to Wax?”

Not to be a contrarian, but the Japanese have conclusively demonstrated that proper hair removal can have healthy consequences, regardless of Dr. Gibson’s claims.

Girl’s Guide to the Internet

Internet scientists Sarah and Alison refute the meme: “There are no girls on the Internet.” Of course, the web remains a mysterious and sometimes deceptive place, where girls might be boys, and where children might be FBI agents.

Sarah and Alison offer tips for women who want to go slumming in Chat rooms without disclosing their sexuality.  For instance, the UserName “DiamondPonyKiss” is a dead giveaway you’re a girl. The alternative suggestion: “BisonWarlock69.” H/T Know Your Meme

Ukraine’s Topless Feminists

Femen (Фемен), the women’s protest movement from the Ukraine, appears to be turning up everywhere these days — boldly flashing their boobs across much of Europe to advance their political beliefs. What are their beliefs? Why have they adopted the tactics they use? Where will it all lead?

Femen, founded in 2008, originally came into existence to battle against the sex trade in the Ukraine and to stop the exportation of Ukraine women to serve as prostitutes in Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. Not only is sex tourism flourishing across the Ukraine, but it’s estimated that as many as one-fourth of Europe’s prostitutes were recruited from the former Soviet republic.

Members of the activist group Femen protest what they see as the manipulation of the democratic system in Kiev, Ukraine, on Feb. 7, 2010.

It might seem strange for a protest group opposed to the sex trade to turn around and use sex as its chief weapon. Why has Femen gone this route? The answer is simple. The media attention brought by this shock tactic magnifies the group’s impact far beyond its numbers. Only about 300 activists belong to Femen, but the group has its sights set on becoming the largest feminist organization in Europe, and eventually the Americas.

“The European feminists differ from us,” says Alexandra Shevchenko, one of Femen’s founders. “They don’t use their bodies and sexuality to get to the goals that are important to women. We use them and hope that in 20 years, people will talk about feminists as beautiful naked women, not as butch, bald and tattooed women.”

Much like Pussy Riot, Femen’s warriors have faced charges of hooliganism at home and come under fire for desecrating symbols associated with the state and church. But they have branched out internationally as well, recently staging a topless protest in London against Olympic participation by Islamic nations that have embraced Sharia Laws that discriminate against women.

To better grasp what all the commotion is about, here’s a 30-minute Finnish TV documentary on Femen, with English subtitles (hit the CC button to see the English captioning). The two Shevchenkos identified in the film are both Femen founders, but they are not sisters, hailing originally from different towns. (NSFW)
