Inventor Whisked Off to Jail

Krister Evertson, a scientist who researched alternative fuels, was driving near his mother’s home when his car was run off the road by a SWAT team with automatic weapons. They arrested him because, in a transaction related to his alternative fuel cell experiments, he forgot to place a federally mandated safety sticker on the box when it was shipped. Although the sodium was properly secured, Evertson spent two years in prison — a shocking miscarriage of justice. H/T Heritage Foundation

Turning the Desert Green

Petroleum-rich Qatar is spearheading projects to tackle the problems facing desert communities worldwide; from energy to fresh water and food production. But does their expensive, high-tech solution make sense?

“Qatar in many ways is ground zero for a lot of the challenges we’re going to see in the century ahead”, argues US ex-pat Jonathan Smith, from the Qatar National Food Program. Soaring temperatures, swelling populations and minimal rainfall plague the otherwise booming nation. Now its leaders are pushing ambitious experiments like the Sahara Forest Project, transforming seawater and sunlight into fresh water, vegetables, electricity, biofuel and animal feed. “The techniques we’re developing here can be applied in many regions in the world”, the project scientists insist.

Can USA Keep Any Secrets?

Michael Hayden, who previously served as the heads of both the CIA and NSA, sat down with CBS’ Bob Schieffer Sunday to weigh in on the international manhunt for Edward Snowden and how much top-secret information he has released to the public about NSA surveillance. Hayden expressed confidence that if the NSA carefully releases more details about the scope and limit of the programs, people will feel more assured, but admitted to Schieffer that “in an ideal world, I’d keep all this secret.”

Schieffer brought up President Obama downplaying the urgency of bringing Snowden back to the United States. Hayden said it’s important to get Snowden, suggesting Obama is just trying to “limit diplomatic and perhaps even political damage.” He claimed the NSA leaks have done “severe and irreversible” damage to the intelligence community, especially the potential damage it could do to U.S. foreign relations when other countries start thinking that American intelligence can’t keep secrets.
