How Life Came to Land

Spiders and crustaceans, also known as arthropods, led the charge from water to land — and still outnumber all terrestrial animals. But what about arthropods makes them so adaptable to life on land? Marine biologist Tierney Thys, and Noé Sardet and Sharif Mirshak of the Plankton Chronicles Project, show us a world of fascinating animals and their habitats.

Cuddle-Worthy Hooters

The Orobie family from Italy became world-famous when a YouTube video went viral, showing daughter Martina petting an owl. Some 13 million people watched the video, including reporters from Vice, who decided to go see the lovely owls themselves at the Falconieri delle Orobie in the Italian town of Villa d’Adda. The family became so enamored with the barn owl a family friend gave Martina, they decided to make the adoption of nocturnal and diurnal raptors their full-time hobby. Taming the Tigers

Thailand’s Tiger Temple, near the western border with Myanmar, is not only a Buddhist temple but also an animal sanctuary housing more than 100 tigers, some born at the compound, others taken there as cubs after poachers killed their mothers. Thousands of tourists annually now visit the temple, some paying royal sums to feed the cubs or have their pictures taken with the big cats. While the attraction is quite popular, several international conservation groups have challenged the temple’s practices and philosophies, claiming it violates animal humane standards. SBS Dateline’s David O’Shea reports from Thailand.

Exploring the Moon’s Origins

A team of Japanese and Cuban biologists has rediscovered a venomous mammal believed to have gone extinct some 30 years ago. Meanwhile, another scientific team has shown why the Moon most likely spun off from the Earth following a violent collision with a celestial body millions of years ago.  In this SciShow, Hank Green describes some news stories that illustrate how science is continually changing the things we think we “know,” asking new questions and making discoveries that change the world, and our understanding of it, every day.
