Penn Jillette’s Philosophy

The magician and entertainer explains his Libertarian philosophy, but also tells why he tries to avoid actively proselytizing or preaching to others about why they should adopt his beliefs.  While he’s a Libertarian who favors maximum civil liberties and freedoms, some situations demand different responses, for instance, if a foreign country mounted an invasion against the United States.

How Can We Preserve Freedom

Magician/atheist Penn Jillette and conservative talk show host Glenn Beck might make for strange bedfellows, but the two are longtime friends and actually agree on many issues. Central to their beliefs: We need more freedom in this country, not less. We need a more limited government grounded on the Constitution, not a government that’s forever growing, amassing power and moving us toward becoming a more totalitarian society.

Walmart Hatred

On Black Friday, a timely day to resurrect this episode of Penn & Teller’s Bullshit, defending Walmart against the political stooges, unions, anti-capitalists, competitors and Left-leaning activists aligned against the retail chain.

This is one of the best takedowns ever of Robert Greenwald, the lockstep propagandist masquerading as a documentary filmmaker, who created Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price, among other works. Greenwald assails Walmart for opposing unions, but as Penn & Teller note, he’s never used union crews on his low-budget, agitprop movies. It brings to mind what William F. Buckley once told a detractor, “I won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said.” (Caution: NSFW, owing to language and nudity) H/T iOwntheWorld

UPDATE: A nationwide boycott against Walmart fizzled out today. Shoppers came out in droves, and as few as 50 Walmart employees — out of a workforce of 1.3 million — staged walkouts. A union-backed group, Our Walmart, was leading the fight and garnered plenty of media coverage, but apparently its support was all Astro-Turf.

PETA’s Fur Flying

Lady Gaga made headlines last week when she dared to wear fur, brushing back a harsh attack from PETA, which routinely slams and smears any celebrities seen in animal pelts. The flap brought to mind Penn & Teller’s classic broadside aimed at PETA, which first aired on Showtime in 2004 as part of the series Penn & Teller: Bulls**t! Chief among the stinging revelations:

  • PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, maintains close ties with ALF, or the Animal Liberation Front, classified by the FBI as a domestic terrorist group.
  • PETA euthanizes many animals assigned to its care, and has a worse track record in placing pets up for adoption than non-PETA run shelters.
  • PETA’s opposition to the use of animals in laboratory research has impeded scientific and medical breakthroughs. The group is so extreme, it would even ban seeing-eye dogs for the blind.
  • Lastly, but certainly not least, PETA advocates have embraced many of the traits of creepy, fanatical cults, proving themselves to be less than ethical, and positively hypocritical, in dealing with their opponents and the targets of their activism.

Watch, but be forewarned: Penn & Teller not only wear leather and eat big, fat, juicy ribs, but Penn also drops quite a few cuss words and Teller drops his pants.
