NSA? A Proposed Solution

Pundit Dick Morris says the threat of terrorism is too great to dismantle the NSA’s spying operations, but he also believes the agency has pushed the outer limits on what’s acceptable, so more checks and balances should be instituted to protect citizens’ privacy rights. One possibility: Appointment of an advocate who could independently review the agency’s operations and file court charges if agency employees or contractors violate laws or misuse the data they collect.

1984 Here We Come

Do you know that your local city bus might be listening to your conversations? Depending on where you live, the sidewalks could be recording your every step. And your lampposts and subway cars may be watching you, too. Once a paranoid notion of science fiction, perpetual state surveillance is fast becoming the new normal. In some cases, the technology is being activated without the consent of the public. H/T Reason TV

Extradition Debate Begins

Now that former CIA employee and NSA contractor Edward Snowden has disclosed he’s the source responsible for leaking details of the NSA’s top-secret surveillance campaign, speculation has turned to whether the US will obtain his extradition from Hong Kong or whether the former crown colony might grant him asylum. Snowden has been holed up in a Hong Kong hotel, but also has said he might eventually want to resettle to Iceland because of its strong positions upholding Internet freedom.

The Long Ears of the Feds

President Obama calls the NSA’s domestic spying on Americans “modest,” but now we know the government has been logging the phone calls, emails, Internet searches and even credit card transactions of millions of citizens, regardless of whether they stand accused of crimes or not. Never before have the Feds so shamelessly violated the privacy of so many innocent citizens, justifying the invasive activity in the name of national security. Fox’s Megan Kelly discusses this Administration’s serious credibility and accountability issues.

Why the Spying Must Cease

If President Obama isn’t already the worst president in American history, he’s vying for that title with news that he has approved the most massive domestic surveillance program ever mounted against the public. It’s one thing to turn the thumbscrews on terrorists, but quite another proposition to monitor the private and business affairs of essentially every American. Lee Doren asks how can we trust the government to collect such sensitive information after learning how the IRS and other federal agencies have been used covertly and unethically to target the president’s political opponents.

Here Come the Cameras

You have already seen the private security footage that sparked the manhunt of the two Boston terrorism suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The footage shows the value of cameras in fighting terrorism.

After the images were released by the FBI, representative Peter King of New York praised surveillance cameras, calling them, “a great law enforcement method and device,” and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “The more cameras the better and I think the privacy issue has really been taken off the table.”

But civil liberties advocates like Peter Bibring of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California say that there is a big difference between obtaining private security footage and government-run cameras like those praised by Rep. King and Commissioner Kelly. H/T Reason.TV
