Student Loan Debt And Fairness

Democrats say they pride themselves on preaching fairness when debating issues. But that sincerity flies out the door when it comes to their pet projects, such as student loan debt.

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is urging her colleagues to pressure Joe Biden to wipe out student loan debt, which now stands at $1.7 trillion, should he inherit the White House. Never mind the dedicated souls who toiled through multiple jobs and double shifts to pay off their loans. Not only would such a lamebrain move make a mockery of the system, but there also is no doubt college tuition rates will skyrocket.

Forbes Media Chairman and former Presidential candidate Steve Forbes says there is a fairness issue to all of this. “It makes the people who took their obligation seriously look like fools. If they have this debt forgiveness of any kind of scale, you’re going to have people wondering why should I pay those obligations, why should I take those extra jobs, why should I sacrifice a private university to go to a public university to save money and honor my obligations?” Here’s more with Forbes on the Fox Business Network.

Freeloader U.

If you haven’t noticed, colleges are getting filthy rich with the massive subsidies and tax breaks they receive from government–all at the expense of students and taxpayers. To put it in perspective, the college business model is actually totally dependent on taxpayers.

And rest assured that their spending habits have gone through the roof. Take Yale University, which pays no property tax on its dining hall, much to the chagrin of surrounding restaurants in New Haven, Conn., and even boasts its own pizza oven in addition to a luxurious golf course on campus. Farther west, the University of Utah has used some of its riches for a student crying room! You just can’t make this stuff up.

A closer look at government tax breaks reveals that colleges and universities are doing quite well, thank you. Yale boasts a $31 billion endowment, while fellow Ivy League school Harvard’s fund is at $40 billion. Yet taxpayers keep doling out the moolah in the way of cash grants and more than $1 trillion nationwide in student loans. It’s how colleges have gotten away with jacking up their tuition at four times the rate of inflation.

Inez Stepman, an education policy researcher at the Independent Women’s Forum, says almost half of the students don’t graduate in six years and end up with an $80,000 debt without a degree. “They’re not making wiser citizens,” she says. “They’re making citizens who hate their country.”  Here’s more with Stepman and consumer journalist John Stossel.

Protests Spur Montreal Debate

Massive student protests in Montreal extending over much of 2012 have spurred a government crackdown on free speech, intensifying the debate over finding the right balance between protecting political dissent and restoring order. The protests, aimed against university tuition hikes, have been mostly peaceful, but incidents of vandalism occurred, and some demonstrators blocked access to public schools and bridges. In response, Quebec’s Liberal provincial government passed Bill 78, which imposed tough measures against the protesters, including stiff fines and restrictions against mobilizing in designated places.

Bill 78 has served as a lightning rod for criticism, condemned as a violation of free speech by the United Nations’ Human Rights Council. But many residents welcomed the measure, having grown weary of the protests disrupting everyday commerce in Canada’s second largest city, with a population pushing 3.5 million. Reason.TV traveled to Montreal to explore the controversy and to interview the principals in the conflict, among them the “Anarchopanda,” a junior college philosophy professor dressed in a panda costume who frequently intervened in an effort to diffuse potential violence between students and riot police.
