Trapped Behind Enemy Lines

Many patriotic Democrats who believe in God and the Constitution have been shoved aside by their party. Says Wild Bill, “The Democrat Party of today is not the party that my grandpa belonged to. What the modern Democrat Party stands for would nauseate World War II Democrats.” Spurred from a letter from a Democrat patriot, Wild Bill suggests launching a Democrat Wing of the Tea Party. Listen to his logic in this edition of Wild Bill for America.

Where are the Baseball Caps?

Zonation’s Alfonzo Rachel opines on the recent, senseless murders of Oklahoma baseball player Christopher Lane and 88-year-old World War II veteran Delbert “Shorty” Belton, of Spokane, Washington. Says Rachel, “I wonder if those who sport hoodies saying, ‘I am Trayvon Martin,” will now sport baseball caps and jerseys saying, ‘I’m Christopher Lane,’ or wear military green saying, ‘I am Delbert Belton.’ Because they were murdered in cold blood.” Listen in, as Rachel wonders why no one is making a huge fuss over these murders.

Palau’s Bomb Squads

In just four years, 23,000 WW2 bombs have been removed from tourist haven Palau. Yet with thousands more littering the island, the legacy of battle remains a deadly threat to people, economy and environment.

“Over there in the mangroves is a 100kg bomb sticking out,” points Steve Ballinger of the demining organization Cleared Ground. The inhabitants of the island are still coming to grips with the extent of the threat. Every search uncovers more bombs: in the waters, caves and even people’s backyards. Acid leaking out of the bombs poisons the water and the animals that people eat. As the race to remove the bombs becomes more hazardous, this report from SBS Australia captures the dangerous task of cleaning up an old mess.

Is War Ever Justified?

Most wars seem to create costs that far outweigh their benefits, but is war ever justified? In this Learn Liberty debate, professors Bryan Caplan and Jan Ting disagree. Caplan argues that pacifism should be the U.S. policy as the costs and benefits of war are too difficult to predict and innocent lives are almost certainly going to be lost. Ting argues that there are occasions in which war is necessary, such as against ideological or religious perspectives that cannot be reasoned with. He uses World War II as an example when U.S. military intervention did more good than harm.

The Sounds of Capitalism

UCLA ethnomusicology professor Tim Taylor talks with Kennedy from Reason.TV about the rise of music in radio advertising and the early days of television. Taylor is the author of a book — The Sounds of Capitalism: Advertising, Music and the Conquest of Culture.

From the early days of radio through the rise of television after World War II to the present, music has been used more and more often to sell goods and establish brand identities. And since at least the 1920s, songs originally written for commercials have become popular songs, and songs written for a popular audience have become irrevocably associated with specific brands and products. Today, musicians move flexibly between the music and advertising worlds, while the line between commercial messages and popular music has become increasingly blurred.

Britain’s Sea Forts

The Maunsell Army Forts could easily be mistaken for a sci-fi movie set on the Planet Hoth. The fortified structures were named after their creator, Guy Maunsell. Built between 1941 and 1942 in the United Kingdom, their purpose was to protect the region from World War II enemy fire. The structures are now in a state of disrepair, but continue to be a popular tourist attraction.

Babes of Burlesque: 48

MISSY MALONE

Scotland’s most celebrated burlesque artist, Missy Malone, isn’t a good fan dancer. She’s a fantastic one. But the fans are only a small part of her stage arsenal. For an act she calls “The Bride,” paying homage to the 1935 movie The Bride of Frankenstein, she dances using that silts that transform her into a towering, nine-foot figure. She also does a champagne-themed balloon dance and impersonates a gambling cowgirl in “Ace of Spades.”

To get a sense of her elaborate costumes and stage props, check out this routine called “Jack Frost,” performed at Burlescapades, hosted by the Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh, Scotland.

From an early age, Missy was inspired by classic American pin-up artwork, particularly WWII airplane nose art. This passion is evident in “The Military Strip,” a duet she performed with Leyla Rose at The Arches in Glasgow, Scotland.
