Five Legal Fights To Follow

As the U.S. Supreme Court enters into the new year, the justices are preparing to confront a series of hot-button issues in the second half of what is widely viewed as a historic term. Here are five legal fights you must follow in 2020.

Since the start of the term in October, the court has already heard arguments on a number of high-profile cases such as on the second amendment, the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the deportation of lawful permanent residents convicted of felonies, and whether the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to LGBTQ workers.
Some Supreme Court fights to keep an eye on in 2020 include cases on Louisiana abortion restrictions, state aid for religious schools, the constitutionality of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), and President Donald Trump’s bid to shield his financial records.

The fight to stop the House and a New York investigation from having access to the president’s financial records reached the high court last month when the Supreme Court agreed to take on Trump’s appeals of the three subpoena-related cases. The cases present important separation of power questions to the justices. One of the cases stems from a subpoena issued by the House Oversight Committee to Trump’s accounting firm Mazars USA to hand over eight years of financial records involving Trump and his business in April as part of its probe into allegations about the president’s financial statements. The Water-Powered Car

Hey internet friends! Welcome to the very first episode of Losers History. We’ve all heard that history is written by the victors, and a good chunk of what we learn from our public school education system is weaponized and muddied propaganda, often only a one-sided snippet of the actual events that took place–you know, important, multi-faceted events, groups, and individuals who have shaped our past and therefore our present. My new series takes a look at the big ol’ losers of our history whose tales are seldom told. You already know by the title of this series that their stories end in tragedy, but what if we could actually learn from their mistakes? More from Really Graceful.

Norse Vikings In Greenland

Erik Thorvaldsson, known as Erik the Red, was a Norwegian Viking, remembered in medieval and Icelandic saga sources as having founded the first Norse settlement in Greenland. His son, Leif Erikson was credited as the first known European to have discovered North America. Studies have found that almost all ivory traded throughout Europe in Medieval times came from Greenland walruses, which became extinct due to over hunting, contributing to the abandonment of Viking settlements. Impeachment in Slow Mode

Despite the frivolous articles of impeachment put forth by the Democratic majority in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell agrees it’s their constitutional right, no matter how unwise.

“They get to start it if they choose,” he says. “But they do not get to declare that it can never be finished. They do not get to trap our entire country into a never-ending Ground Hog Day of impeachment without resolution.”

The articles of impeachment have now been held hostage by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi for three weeks and there are signs of some cracks in the Democrat Party armor. Democrats in both chambers of Congress, including Sen. Dianne Feinstein from California, are urging Pelosi to get on with the process. Here’s more from McConnell on the Senate floor.
