What’s the dirtiest secret in Congress? The answer: The unfettered ability of members of Congress to use exclusive information they gather to make profitable stock trades.
U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna, the Democrat from California who partnered with Republican Thomas Massie to push the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, is a prime example. When Khanna came to Congress, he had a net worth of $800,000. Now, he boasts a net worth of $30 million.
How did he pad his wealth so quickly? Since he has joined the House, Khanna has made, on average, 42 stock deals a week. And he’s hardly the only one pulling this monkey business.
Congressional members make more than 25,000 stock deals per year. Efforts to implement reforms and forbid insider trading by members of Congress keep getting voted down — mostly by the Democrats, but also by Republicans in on the take.
