When Insects First Flew

Insects were the first animals able to fly and they did it best. That’s because evolution works with what it has and the fact that body structures don’t crop up very often. This development by insects was so unusual that scientists are still working on–and arguing about–how and when insect wings first came about. Hallie Moore fills in the details in this episode of PBS Eons.

I’m Not Eating Bugs

The Age of Giant Insects

Although we call our time the Age of Mammals, we should call it the Age of Insects, because there are way more of them than there are of us. But we like to think we’re in charge because we’re bigger. The Cicadas Are Coming!

Cicadas have developed an amazing strategy for growth, survival, reproduction, and overcoming predation by…doing nothing. They do nothing for years (except sip at the juice excreted from root structures) before emerging in huge, simultaneous swarms.

The swarm is so huge that predators can’t consume even a fraction of it, but so rare that predator populations can’t sustain themselves between emergence events. Clever little things! More from Hank Green at the SciShow.
